Glossy Paper vs Wood Free Paper: Which Is Best for Your Printing Needs?
Key Summary
Choosing the right paper can affect how your printed materials look and function. For Singapore businesses, glossy paper is a popular choice for flyers and vouchers because it helps colours and images stand out, while wood-free paper, also known as uncoated paper, is suitable for writing pads and other materials that people need to write on. PrintStudio offers flyer options including 80gsm wood-free paper and glossy paper options from 128gsm and above, depending on your requirements. Before placing an order, consider your budget, design, and how customers will use the printed material.
Introduction
When preparing printed materials, it is easy to focus on the design, colours and message while overlooking the paper itself. However, paper choice affects how your materials look, feel and function. A promotional voucher needs to present its offer clearly, while a writing pad needs a surface that people can use comfortably with a pen. Choosing suitable paper helps your printed materials serve their intended purpose.
For Singapore SMEs, printed materials remain useful across retail, food and beverage, education, professional services and corporate operations. Flyers can introduce promotions, vouchers can encourage customers to redeem an offer, and writing pads can support meetings, training sessions or daily office work. Although these products may all carry your brand identity, they have different requirements. The paper that works well for a colourful promotional flyer may not be the most practical choice for a writing pad.
Two options worth understanding are glossy paper and wood-free paper. Glossy paper has a coated surface that helps printed colours and images appear vibrant. Wood-free paper is commonly used to describe uncoated paper made from chemically processed pulp, giving it a more natural paper surface. Each serves a different purpose, so the best choice depends on what you are printing and how people will use it.
Glossy Paper vs Wood Free Paper: Key Differences and Uses
Glossy Paper: Ideal for Flyers, Vouchers and Colourful Promotions
Glossy paper has a smooth, coated surface that helps colours look vibrant and photographs appear sharp. It is suitable for image-led promotional materials, including flyers and vouchers, where businesses want customers to notice product images, special offers and campaign visuals. PrintStudio offers glossy flyer paper options from 128gsm and above, depending on the product specification. The higher paper weight can also provide a more substantial feel than thinner paper. However, glossy surfaces can reflect light, which may make text harder to read in certain lighting conditions. For the best result, use clear text, sufficient contrast, and a layout that makes key information easy to find.
Wood-Free Paper: Practical for Writing Pads and Everyday Stationery
Wood-free paper, often referred to as uncoated paper in printing, has a natural surface without the smooth coating found on glossy paper. It is a practical option for writing pads, notebooks, letterheads, and other stationery that people need to write on. Its surface is generally suitable for handwriting, making it useful for office meetings, training sessions, classes, and customer notes. PrintStudio also offers an 80gsm wood-free paper option for flyers, giving businesses a lighter paper choice when appropriate. However, paper weight and suitability should be considered alongside the intended use. If the flyer needs a more substantial feel or contains extensive colour photography, discuss the available paper options before ordering.
Which Paper Gives Your Brand the Right Impression?
Glossy paper can create a vibrant, promotional look that suits campaigns designed to attract attention. Wood-free paper offers a more understated, practical feel that works well for everyday stationery. These are general impressions rather than fixed rules. Your brand colours, typography, layout, paper weight and print quality all contribute to the final result. A well-designed glossy flyer can communicate an offer clearly, while a well-designed wood-free writing pad can present your brand professionally. The key is to match the paper to the purpose of the printed item.
Which Paper Should Singapore Businesses Choose?
Choose Glossy Paper for Flyers and Vouchers
Glossy paper is worth considering when your printed material relies on colourful images, product photography or promotional graphics. Singapore cafés and restaurants can use glossy flyers to promote new menus, seasonal offers or meal bundles. Retailers can use vouchers to highlight discounts, redemption conditions and campaign dates. Event organisers can also consider glossy flyers when visual impact is a priority. For these materials, make sure the offer, validity period, terms, and call to action remain easy to read. Glossy paper can enhance the visuals, but a clear design is still essential.
Choose Wood-Free Paper for Writing Pads and Stationery
Wood-free paper is suitable when people need to write directly on the printed surface. Businesses can use branded writing pads during client meetings, conferences, workshops, and staff training. Tuition centres can consider it for notes and learning materials, while offices may use it for internal forms and everyday stationery. A branded writing pad can keep your business identity visible while providing something useful to customers or employees. When selecting paper, consider how often the pad will be used, the amount of writing space required, and whether the design leaves enough room for notes.
What About Budget and Paper Weight?
Paper selection should consider both cost and function. PrintStudio offers an 80gsm wood-free paper option for flyers, as well as glossy flyer paper options from 128gsm and above. The suitable choice depends on the design, quantity, intended distribution, and desired feel. A lightweight flyer may work for straightforward information distribution, while a heavier glossy option may better suit a colourful promotion that needs a more substantial presentation. Your printing budget should be considered alongside the result you want to achieve. If you are unsure, ask about the available paper specifications and compare options before confirming your order.
Choose the Right Paper with PrintStudio
Choosing between glossy paper and wood-free paper starts with understanding the job your printed material needs to do. If your goal is to showcase product images, communicate a promotion, or distribute vouchers, glossy paper may be suitable. If your goal is to provide a practical writing surface, wood-free paper is a sensible option for writing pads and stationery. Considering the purpose first helps you avoid paying for paper features that do not contribute to the intended result.
PrintStudio helps businesses consider their printing requirements, including paper options, artwork, quantity, and budget. Whether you are preparing flyers for a retail campaign, vouchers for customer promotions, or writing pads for corporate use, selecting the right paper can help your materials perform as intended. If you are uncertain about paper weight or surface suitability, discuss the available specifications with the team before proceeding with a larger order.

Is glossy paper suitable for flyers and vouchers?
Yes. Glossy paper is a popular option for flyers and vouchers that rely on colourful graphics, photographs, and promotional visuals. However, reflections can affect readability under certain lighting conditions, so ensure the text remains clear.
Can I print flyers on 80gsm wood-free paper?
PrintStudio offers an 80gsm wood-free paper option for flyers. Whether it is suitable depends on your intended use, distribution method, and desired paper feel. If you need a more substantial flyer, ask about the available heavier paper options.

Wood-free paper is commonly used for writing pads because its uncoated surface is suitable for handwriting. It is practical for meeting notes, training sessions, office use, and other everyday writing tasks.
Is heavier paper always better for flyers?
Not necessarily. Heavier paper can feel more substantial, but the best choice depends on your budget, distribution method, and design. Consider how the flyer will be handled and what impression you want it to create.
